What is OpenClaw? The lobster-themed AI agent, explained
Updated · prices checked on vendor pages
Quick answer: OpenClaw is a free, open-source personal AI agent. You run it on your own machine, hook it up to the AI model of your choice, and talk to it through WhatsApp, Telegram or another chat app. It does stuff for you: inbox, emails, calendar, flight check-ins. No subscription. You pay for the model, that's it.
It's also massive. Close to 392,000 GitHub stars as of mid-October 2026, which puts it among the most-starred projects on the whole site. Not bad for something that started in November 2025.

What does it actually do?
The official site's pitch: it organises your inbox, sends emails, manages your calendar and checks you in for flights. All from a chat app. You message it like a mate, it goes and does the job.
It's built around skills (add-on abilities), your own memories and your choice of models. The site's line is "Your memories. Your skills. Your models. Your machines. Your data." You can run it just for yourself or share it with your team.
Installers handle the gateway, chat, setup and node features for you on all three desktop platforms.
How much does OpenClaw cost?
The software is free. Forever, by the look of it: the Foundation says there's no enterprise edition and no paid version.
What you do pay for:
- The AI model. Use a cloud model and you pay that provider's API rates. Use a local model and it's your electricity.
- Hosting, if you want it always on and don't fancy leaving your laptop running.
- Optional add-ons like web search APIs.
Beware random "OpenClaw Cloud" price lists on third-party sites. The official site explicitly says there's no hosted tier.
Who's behind it?
The OpenClaw Foundation, a US non-profit. It employs the core team, signs every release and keeps the whole thing MIT licensed. Donors include the University of Michigan, OpenAI, Amazon and Red Hat, among others. The Foundation says donors don't own or direct the project and no lab's model gets special treatment.
The founder is Peter Steinberger (steipete), who now works at OpenAI. The site is clear: OpenClaw is not an OpenAI product.
By default an install only sends the Foundation a daily version check, and you can switch that off.
Who should use it?
Good fit if:
- You want a personal agent you fully control
- You're happy to install software and plug in an API key
- You want to pick your own models, including local ones
- You'd rather not pay a monthly sub
Not for you if:
- You don't want to host anything: Grok Bot gives you an agent with its own cloud computer
- You want an agent that builds its own skills from experience: Hermes Agent leans hard on that

FAQ
Is OpenClaw free?
Yes. OpenClaw is free and open source under the MIT licence, with no subscription or paid tier. You pay for the AI model you connect and any hosting.
Is OpenClaw made by OpenAI?
No. It's run by the OpenClaw Foundation, an independent non-profit. OpenAI is one of several donors and the founder works there, but the Foundation says OpenClaw is not an OpenAI product.
What can OpenClaw do?
It handles tasks like organising your inbox, sending emails, managing your calendar and checking you in for flights, all through chat apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Skills add more abilities.
Is OpenClaw safe to use?
It runs on your machines with your data, and by default only sends a daily version check, which you can disable. As with any agent that can send email and act for you, give it only the access it needs.
