Cursor vs Claude Code: which one should you pay for?

Updated · prices checked on vendor pages

Quick verdict: Want AI inside a proper editor? Cursor. Want to hand off whole features and come back to a diff? Claude Code. Loads of people run both. Claude Code plugs into editors, Cursor included.

They're not really the same kind of thing. Cursor is an editor with AI baked in. Claude Code is an agent that does the graft across your repo from the terminal or IDE. Comparing them is a bit like comparing a car to a driver. Still, you've got one budget, so here's the call.

The big Cursor catch nobody reads

Cursor's plans are now sold through the X Subscription. The $8 Plus plan is Grok models only. Premium at $30 adds cloud agents, code review via Bugbot and access to third-party models, but those third-party models (Claude, GPT and friends) are billed separately at API list price. They don't come out of your plan's pool.

So if you're buying Cursor mainly to use Claude inside it, you're paying for Cursor and then paying per token for Claude on top. Read that twice before you hit subscribe.

The upside: Plus at $8 is a steal if Grok models do the job for you. And the usage pool refreshes weekly, so one heavy day doesn't nuke your month.

Where Claude Code wins

Repo-wide work. It's the strongest agentic coder we list for multi-file features. Give it a task, let it plan, edit and run things, review the result.

Predictable cost. You hit session limits rather than surprise bills. Annoying when it happens, kinder to your bank.

Works where you work. Terminal or IDE. It doesn't make you switch editors.

Where Cursor wins

It's an editor. Tab completions, inline edits, chat next to your code. If you like to drive and want a clever co-pilot, this is home.

Cheaper door in. $8 vs $20. If you're testing the waters, Cursor Plus is the cheapest way in.

Cloud agents and code review on Premium and above, plus a bunch of Grok extras bundled in.
